Rusk, Wadlin, Heppner & Martuscello, LLP Celebrating 150 years

Talcum Powder Lawsuits

Once believed to be a perfectly safe personal hygiene product, talcum powder has been linked with hundreds of cases of ovarian cancer across the country. Women across New York and the country are filing lawsuits against makers of talcum powder, such as Johnson & Johnson, for failing to warn them of the risk of harm associated with years of talcum powder use.

If you or your loved one was a regular user of talcum powder who has developed ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer, you may have a claim for money damages. Contact the Hudson Valley defective product attorneys at Rusk, Wadlin, Heppner & Martuscello for a free consultation on your case.

Numerous studies link talcum powder use and development of cancer in women

The American Cancer Society reports that about 22,530 American women will receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer this year, and that about 13,980 will die from the cancer. It is considered the deadliest cancer of the female reproductive system. As far back as 1982, researchers had noticed a link between the use of talcum powder and the development of ovarian cancer, and yet Johnson & Johnson, the largest US retailer of talcum powder, provided no warning to its customers of the possible link. In fact, after the World Health Organization labeled baby powder as “possibly carcinogenic” in 2006, Johnson & Johnson ramped up its talcum powder marketing efforts aggressively.

Many researchers have found a link between talcum powder use and cancer. A study by Harvard researchers that was published in 2010 found that regular use of talcum powder was linked to a 24% increase in risk of later being diagnosed with endometrial cancer. One recently-published study of African-American women found a 40% increased risk of cancer after using talcum powder on the genital area, and a 30% increased risk for use of the powder elsewhere on the body.

Thousands of cancer victims are taking legal action

There are currently over 13,000 lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson. Numerous cancer victims have already won substantial jury verdicts in their favors. In one case, 22 women with ovarian cancer won a jury award of $4.69 billion from a St. Louis jury after showing that their disease was linked to years of talcum powder use. In another case, the family of a Missouri woman who had used baby powder for over 40 years and who died of ovarian cancer was awarded $72 million in damages against Johnson & Johnson.
